The cost advantage of ‘Hybrid Desktop Virtualization’
Experience tells us that virtualizing the whole client PC through VDI is expensive and prone to performance issues. Still, the rationale for central control of the desktop is powerful. With centralization and standardization, helpdesk’s workload is reduced and software upgrades are greatly simplified. However, virtualizing all the apps and the desktop requires significant CPU in the central servers. Moreover, new Windows and Office licenses need to be purchased.
What if you could virtualize through VDI only your legacy apps and still retain central control of your user desktops? This is what we called Hybrid Desktop Virtualization: giving priority to the most efficient protocol, i.e. web technology, whenever you can, and levarage the eyeOS platform to take full control of the user interface.
SaaS and on premise apps are simply accessed as web services via SSO within the eyeOS private cloud while legacy apps are virtualized through existing VDI technologies like Citrix Xen App and delivered through the eyeOS user interface. Since web technology is highly efficient, any incremental shift from virtualized apps to web apps helps shrink the size of your data center. It goes directly to your bottom line and reduces the complexity of your data center.
Finally, existing PCs with their local software licences can be leveraged as they can run a browser and manage an Internet connection. Even simple Linux machines can do it.
